About Us

Established in 1853, Messrs A. Wycherley are Lewes' leading and longest established firm of Estate Agents, providing a comprehensive service to our customers, including sales and lettings, within Lewes and it's surrounding area.

With over 160 years of experience we have developed an extensive and unsurpassed knowledge of the local property market enabling us to offer a wide-ranging service that is both friendly and professional as befits our reputation. We are committed to providing our customers (whether property sellers, buyers, developers etc.) with individual high quality advice based on the wealth of experience of our local dedicated sales team and partners. With all the traditional values you would expect from a well established firm combined with the latest innovations and technology, we offer a modern quality service.

Founded by Henry Wycherley, his son Alfred introduced the firm's existing name, Messrs A Wycherley, and was followed by his son Charles Snr in 1933. Charles’ son, Ivor, became senior partner in 1939 at the age of 17 and worked until 2013. Alfred Wycherley sold Leonard and Virginia Woolf the Round House in Pipe Passage in 1919 and then subsequently bid for them at auction to purchase the now famous Monks House in Rodmell. He is featured, along with Charles Snr and Ivor, in the popular book 'Mrs Dudeney's Diary'.

Anne and Charles Wycherley are the fifth generation of the firm, daughter and son of Ivor Wycherley, being the existing two fully qualified family partners, and whom carry out RICS HomeBuyer Reports and are RICS Registered Valuers.

Anne Wycherley commenced full time work with the firm in 1972, qualifying with the ISVA in 1975, and completing a BSc. in Estate Management from Reading University in 1976, leading to qualification as a Chartered Surveyor in 1979. She obtained the additional qualification of Domestic Energy Assessor in 2008 to carry out Energy Performance Certificates for domestic property.

Charles Wycherley has a B.Sc. in Estate Management from South Bank University, working for St.John Smith of Uckfield in his 'sandwich' year, including auction work. He worked at Lewis & Tucker in the West End, doing a full range of property management and then was 2nd Surveyor for Barnard Marcus carrying out full surveys, rent reviews and mortgage valuations in south and west London. Charles returned to the family firm in 1986, qualifying as an Incorporated Valuer in 1985 and then as a Chartered Surveyor in 1990. Charles was Junior Chairman of the RICS Sussex Branch and has won two national auction competitions.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors have now established the qualification of RICS Registered Valuer. Valuations underpin nearly all financial decisions from home mortgage to major investment and corporate finance. We provide Probate Valuations for Banks, Solicitors, Executors and Beneficiaries, in many cases on the basis of a specialist Red Book Valuation, as often required by institutions these days. Anne and Charles Wycherley hold the qualification of RICS Registered Valuer which, where necessary, can be used at the same time as a Structural Survey, HomeBuyers Report or becoming Agents for the sale of the property.

Our Ethos

The essence of Messrs A. Wycherley as a firm is that we truly know Lewes like the 'back of our hands'. A member of this Wycherley family has sold and rented houses, shops and just about anything in Lewes and the surrounding villages, since 1853. It is very rare that Anne or Charles walk into a property in Lewes that they have not previously sold, valued, surveyed or rented. You simply cannot beat this experience! Being qualified Chartered Surveyors means that when a survey or legal problem comes up, for example on title, contract, boundaries or insurance, we really do know how to deal with it, because we have dealt with similar issues on other properties and sales. If an issue on survey means the purchaser is trying to achieve a reduction on the price of your house, we can analyse the problems with real knowledge, and argue the points as required with the respect that qualifications and depth of expertise achieve.

With this website and modern branding we bring you both the technology and professional image that you would expect. Our members of staff are local and have immense experience, meaning top quality service even if the 'hands on' parties are unavailable.

Originating in the historic cobbled Keere Street, Wycherleys moved slowly east down the High Street until settling at their current home at 56 High Street in 1921. This building was previously The Unicorn public house, and before that The Three Pelicans. The A.Wycherley scripted logo has always featured on the door and our large shop window allows us to display all of our properties and, even in these days of internet browsing, Sunday morning is still a favourite Wycherley window 'viewing day'!

To this end, we are contactable for viewings at any time, any day, either on the main office number, 01273 473329, or Charles Wycherley's home number 01273 890003 or mobile 07912 935889. Our office opening times are 8.30am-5.45pm Monday-Friday and 9.00am-4.00pm Saturday.
